Loam, the construction material of the past and of the future
Compared with the common industrial produced materials loam has three disadvantages:
-
Loam
is no standardised material! Loam is a conglomeration of clay and sand
that also can contain larger particles. Loam can possess different
characteristics and needs to be combined according to the constructive
techniques differently.
-
Loam
decreases while drying! By evaporation of the water that is needed to
work with loam and to activate its binding efficacy the volume reduces,
so drying bursts appear.
-
Loam
is not waterproof! Loam needs to be protected of rain and freeze. Loam
walls must be protected constantly of humidity by constrictive
solutions (endurance of the roof, socle with a waterproof surface,
horizontal insulation against rising humidity) and by use of adequate
fineries.
Those three disadvantages important advantages oppose:
-
Loam
regulates the humidity of air! Loam can absorb humidity of air quite
quickly and is able to hand it back when needed. So the humidity of the
air in a room is regulated and this is an important part of a healthy
room climate. The average is 50% and is fluctuating about 5% only. This
constant humidity of air means an extreme healthy and pleasant room
climate. So drying of the mucous membranes does not happen, the air
contains less fine dust and this way loam prevents cold illnesses.
-
Loam
stores warmth, comparable to other heavy construction materials. This
way the living climate can be improved and by passive use of sun-energy
the need of external energy is lowered.
-
Loam
saves energy and lowers the pollution of the environment! Loam needs
for preparation and construction compared with other materials only a
very little energy and provides pollution. For example: loam needs only
about 1% of the energy that is needed for producing steel concrete.
-
Loam
is always completely recyclable! The not burned loam can be recycled
any time and unlimited. Dry loam needs only been cut into small pieces
and humidified by ordinary water and can be used again directly. Loam
can never pollute the environment as rubble.
-
Loam
saves construction material and transport costs! On most of the
construction plots loam is dug out for the cellar or fundaments. When
it is not containing too much clay or too large stone particles it is
with the ordinary earth-humidity directly ready for use. When
containing too much clay it must be mixed with for example sand.
Because use of the dug out ground means no need for transportation.
This way costs are lowered and pollution is reduced. Is no loam
available at the construction plot it often can be purchased cheaply at
the next brickyard.
-
Loam
is a good material for do-it-yourself! Under supervision of a
specialist also amateurs can construct in loam. Because the traditional
loam construction techniques only need a very little use of machines
and on the other side the techniques are personal intensive they are
well suitable for do-it-yourself.
-
Loam
conserves wood! Seen the fact that loam naturally contains a relative
low percentage of water wood and other organic materials are dried up
or kept dry by the surrounding loam and are this way protected of mould
or insects.
-
Loam
is binding harmful substances! The air-cleaning properties of loam
often have been described. This phenomena is only based on subjective
impressions, they have not been improved by science up to now. But the
fact that loam absorbs harmful substances from damp is proofed.
Because
we stay for about 90% of our time in buildings the room climate in our
living, sleeping and working rooms are substantial factor of our
wellness and health. The wellness in rooms are determined by the
following physical dimensions:
Room
temperature, temperature of the walls and other surfaces closing the
room, movements of the room air, humidity of the air and pollution by
gases and dust.
Every
user of a room feels immediately when the temperature is too high or
low or the movement of the air is too large and will try to influence
this the wanted direction. The negative results of a too high or too
low humidity of air are mostly not known and with easy means not to be
regulated. Because the humidity of air in our rooms is an important
factor for our heath and loam has the property to regulate the humidity
of air as no other material, is limiting draught and not only
absorbing, but also emits warmth this material creates a remarkable
healthy and pleasant living climate.
